Police investigating alleged fixed UFC fight

Postby J D » Wed Apr 19, 2017 10:38 am

South Korean authorities are investigating allegations of fight-fixing at a UFC event in the country in 2015.

Numerous publications in the region are reporting that a Korean fighter, who has not been named, accepted a payment to throw a fight against a US opponent — though he actually ended up winning the bout by decision.

Reports allege that the fighter, who is referred to as ‘Fighter A’, was paid somewhere in the region of $88,000 to throw the contest and also placed a bet of around $44,000 on his opponent to win. It is worth noting that any wrong-doing appears to have been done independently by fighters without any knowledge from the UFC or its employees.

The betting odds surrounding the fight were dramatically altered in the lead-in to the fight and, as per the report published on Bloody Elbow, UFC officials were concerned by the unusual change in the betting line and questioned the fighter about any possible connections to illegal betting. It was at this point that the fighter decided to abandon plans to throw the fight, fearing the consequences of doing so.

After winning the bout, ‘Fighter A’ allegedly received threats concerning his safety and it was at this point that he decided to contact the authorities and come clean as to his involvement which set in motion the current investigation.

While most reports don’t outright name the fighter in question, looking at the fight card for the UFC event in South Korea in November 15 leaves little disputing as to who the allegations might be naming. The fight, on the preliminary portion of the card, had the Korean fighter as a massive underdog though the odds were reversed in just a couple of hours — an unusual move for a low profile fight so far down the card.

So the event was Fight Night Henderson vs Masvidal.

The fighter appears to be Tae Hyun Bang.

Yep, that's the dude.

Back in November of 2015, Tae Hyun Bang stepped onto the canvas with Leo Kuntz. He did so on the undercard of a UFC Fight Night in Seoul, in his native South Korea.

In the end, Bang and Kuntz’s fight went down as a fairly forgettable one, with Bang earning a close, split decision win. The final hours before this fight, however, stand out in the memory as some seriously suspect ones.

If you had your finger on the pulse of the fight game back then, you’ll remember that, in the hours leading up to Bang and Kuntz’s fights, there was a massive swing in the odds in Kuntz’s favor. This wasn’t a small, last-minute change, but an unprecedented transformation in the odds, which immediately raised eyebrows amongst the more discerning members of the MMA community.

While there was no way to prove that we were witnessing the signs of fight-fixing at the time, it sure seemed that way. It seemed as though somebody, or perhaps many people, with inside knowledge of the situation – knowing perhaps that Bang was badly injured or that he was going to throw the fight – were putting massive sums down on Kuntz. This drastically changed the complexion of the betting odds, as they were adjusted to reflect new confidence in a Kuntz win.

There were red flags everywhere.

But then Bang won the fight, which immediately clashed with all of the fight-fixing accusations that had burbled to the surface in the buildup to his fight. The odds had swung in Kuntz’s favor, which meant that if anybody was going to throw the fight, it was going to be Bang. But he won, and so suddenly, there was far less reason to cry fix.

As it turns out, however, anyone who was skeptical of the massive odds swing in the buildup to this fight was right. This week, it has been reported by multiple sources that a nameless South Korean UFC fighter is currently involved in a police investigation stemming from this card. BJPenn.com’s Chris Taylor has confirmed with a source with knowledge of the situation that this fighter is indeed Tae Hyun Bang. Taylor also acquired some new details on the situation.

Here are the details as they stand now, as per our source:

In the buildup to the fight, Bang got involved with some gangsters, who convinced him to throw the fight. These gangsters, who the South Korean police are calling “gambling brokers”, then bet a massive 200 million Won (roughly $176,000 USD) on Kuntz. Bang, meanwhile, was paid 100 million Won to take the fall. He then bet half of this sum (roughly $44,000 USD) on Kuntz. All in all, it is estimated that the nefarious parties involved in this underhanded betting scandal wagered close to $2 million USD on Kuntz. This massive betting on Kuntz is what swung the odds so significantly in his favor.

Unsurprisingly, this shady, last-minute odds-shift caught the attention of the UFC, who quickly began questioning Bang. Realizing that he was essentially screwed either way, Bang then decided to fight to win, rather than throw the fight. The result of this change of heart was his split decision defeat of Kuntz.

In the fallout of this ugly ordeal, Bang has reportedly received multiple death threats from the shadowy villains who pushed him into taking a fall, who are unsurprisingly not pleased that he didn’t hold up his end of the deal. As a result, he has come clean to South Korean police, and is now embroiled in an investigation surrounding the incident.

Since this incident occurred, Bang has fought once more, giving up a decision to Nick Hein. The UFC has not yet commented on the situation, but given that this is the first verifiable instance of fight fixing in the promotion’s history, they’re bound to release a statement soon.

hmmmmm this is an interesting story. Very odd. I remember the Bang vs Kuntz fight. We all joked about it being "bang kuntz" which is funny.

Bang rocked him early and gassed trying to finish. The rest of the fight was quite boring. The decision was kinda shady.

It will be intriguing to see what other evidence comes out about this. So far it seems like hearsay mixed in with the fact the betting odds were swinging all over the place, which is odd for a fight of this caliber of course.

Seems odd that Bang would risk getting cut by the ufc and lose on purpose to Kuntz. Bang had lost the fight before and needed a win badly.

Seems fishy he would need the money too. Not saying he is a millionaire but the fight before he won a performance bonus and fight of the night bonus, 100,000 in bonus money alone!

I will enjoy watching this story and seeing how it develops. Interesting stuff mr JD sir

This probably happens more than we think except the guy doesn't end up winning the fight. I bet it happens a lot in sketchy countries and the guy actually follow through and loses

I find it hard to believe that under 16 years of mafia family ownership, not a single fight was fixed or influenced or manipulated in any way.

If you agree to throw a fight and then change your mind it's not a fixed fight. It's was a legal conspiracy but not a fix unless you lost.

The fact that the Fertitta brothers had licenses to operate casinos in Vegas proves they have no ties to the mob. Those licenses aren't just handed out and even a notion that someone has ties to the mob is enough for the license to be denied.

I always suspected fixed fights in the UFC but if this guy changed his mind mid fight and won then its not fixed. Its hella shady and fucked, they probably tried to muscle him into taking a dive and his pride wouldn't allow him. The money seemed great enough for anyone to take a dive, so everything still seems fishy.
