Gerald Meerschaert vs. Ryan Janes

Round 1 – Keith Peterson is the third man to get us started tonight in Halifax. Meerschaert goes to the middle and tries an early knee, and then they both connect with lefts. Janes isn’t messing around. He wobbles Meerschaert’s knees a little bit with a punch, then takes him down along the fence. Janes’ version of ground-and-pound early is slamming Meerschaert to the canvas when he grabs on. But then when Janes tries to adjust, Meerschaert out of nowhere grabs his right arm, and he’s got it tight. Janes has to tap to a super-slick armbar out of the blue.

Result: Gerald Meerschaert def. Ryan Janes via submission (armbar) – Round 1, 1:34

Jack Marshman vs. Thiago “Marreta” Santos

Round 1 – Lots of potential for a slugfest in this one, and sure enough, both guys come out swinging. Punches are landed by both, but a minute in, Santos takes Marshman down along the fence and forces him to go to work out of his guard on his back. Santso postures up and drops down some pretty heavy hands, then goes back to his feet and kicks at Marshman’s legs. Marshman can’t get back to his feet, so Santos dives back in around two minutes into the round. Finally, Marshman works his way back up and the crowd cheers when the fight goes back to the center halfway through the frame. Santos gets off a nice kick to the body, then the two trade again. Marshman lands a big punch with 45 seconds left and drop sSantos to the canvas. Then he stuns him some more when he gets back up. With 25 seconds left he lands a barrage, but Santos stays upright and nods at him while the crowd erupts its approval. It’s a close round, but MMAjunkie will give a slight edge to Marshman 10-9 based on the knockdown and the late surge.

Round 2 – Marshman lands a nice kick early, then deals with some pesky kicks from Santos. But a minute in, Marshman backs Santos up with a combo. Santos lands a big kick to the body, and Marshman counters with a right hand. They both land some heavy punches in tight quarters, then go back to the center. Marshman stalks Santos down big time around the outside of the cage. And then, bam. Massive spinning right head kick from Santos. Just massive. Marshman goes down. Santos follows him and lands a half-dozen shots, and the referee shuts things down. Marshman looks like he might have been able to fight through it, but the head kick was just insane and that was probably a very justifiable stoppage.

Result: Thiago “Marreta” Santos def. Jack Marshman via TKO (kick, punches) – Round 2, 2:21

Aiemann Zahabi vs. Reginaldo Vieira

Round 1 – UFC debut for Zahabi, brother of longtime trainer Firas Zahabi. Vieira tries to work some low kicks from the outside with Zahabi in the center. Vieira lands a couple rights, but Zahabi stays right in his face and lands a couple high kicks and some punches. Vieira stays standing, but Zahabi was scoring for sure. Zahabi lands a left kick to the midsection, then gets in side with a two-punch combo with a left high kick behind it. Again, Zahabi backs Vieira up – he’s showing really no first-time jitters at all. Vieira keeps working the kicks, but Zahabi comes over the top with a bit head kick. That makes Vieira try to chase Zahabi down, and he catches up to him and spills him down with a double-leg. Zahabi doesn’t waste any time getting up, though, and it’s back to the middle with 1:25 to go. Vieira lands with a right, but Zahabi plants a perfect kick on his body that echos throughout the building. Vieira wants a takedown and gets one with 10 seconds left. But it still feels like Zahabi’s 10-9 round because of the advantage in the striking department. And Vieira’s face is showing it a bit, as well.

Round 2 – Zahabi gets some punches off early, but about a minute in Vieira lands a flurry to show he’s still in this thing. Vieira tries a right uppercut, but it’s off the mark. Then a hook misses when Zahabi ducks away. Vieira ties things up on the fence for a bit, but Zahabi breaks it off. And when Vieira wants to do the same again, Zahabi threatens him with a guillotine choke. He can’t hold it, though, and Vieira pushes him on the cage. With a minute left, the break apart and Zahabi tries to get after it. Vieira lands a punch to the body and one to the face, but Zahabi comes forward and lands some big punches. He knocks Vieira to the canvas and lands some punches on the ground. He’s on top when the horn sounds, but he can’t get the finish. And because of that late flurry and knockdown, he stole the round back on the MMAjunkie card, 10-9.

Round 3 – Both guys probably need to think it could be anyone’s fight going into this round, so there’s probably going to be no cruise control. They’re a little tentative early, but Zahabi lands some good punches as we approach the three-minute mark. Vieira thinks about dropping for a takedown, but it’s way too slow and Zahabi easily stuffs it. Zahabi tries a pretty spinning kick, but it misses. Vieira tries to come over the top of it with a right, but that’s off the mark, too. Again, Vieira wants a takedown, but there’s nothing there. Briefly, Zahabi has that guillotine, but can’t do anything with it. With a minute left, Vieira picks Zahabi up for a slam, but there’s not as much on it as there could be and Zahabi is back to his feet. He’s cut up though, and looking tired. But he comes forward with 20 seconds left for some good punches and a kick. Vieira ties him up on the fence late, and that’s how it will end. Pretty entertaining fight. MMAjunkie gives the third to Zahabi 10-9, but again a close one, and the fight to him 30-27.

Result: Aiemann Zahabi def. Reginaldo Vieira via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Carla Esparza vs. Randa Markos

Round 1 – Former strawweight champ Esparza is ready to roll. Markos gets in a low stance in the middle, then goes outside. She stutter steps, then pops a left jab out. Then tries a right hook. Esparza staying patient the first 75 seconds looking for an o pening. Two minutes in, no one has landed anything of significance. Both fighters are trying to get a jab working. Esparza tries a few rights, but they’re not there. With 90 seconds left, Esparza does her first solid work of the round and gets a takedown. She quickly gets to side control, but then has to deal with Markos getting out and working for an armbar. And when she can’t get that, she keeps Esparza’s arm tied up and drills her over and over with punches. But Esparza recovers in the final 10 seconds to get on top and land some elbows. Esparza gets credit for the takedown, of course, but Markos did more work with it and was more active on the feet. MMAjunkie will give Markos a close 10-9 first.

Round 2 – Markos has a great jab that if she could get going could be a difference maker. Twice Esparza pushes forward with punches, and twice Markos answers back with solid counters. With two minutes left, Esparza again gets some nice stuff done – but Markos is right behind it with the counters and Esparza drops to a knee on the fence – though that might have been a slip as Markos pressed forward with punches. Esparza drops for a takedown and gets it with a minute left. She gets to side control, then pops to mount and gets an arm-triangle choke on. Markos is fighting it, and she’s going to survive the round by punching Esparza in the side of the head with the choke still attached. Esparza gets a 10-9 second frame.

Round 3 – Markos tries to get after it right away in the third and runs Esparza down. But Esparza answers with a brief takedown attempt and they go back to the middle. There, Markos lands a big punch that gets her home Canadian crowd excited. She ducks away from a several-punch combo, then pops Esparza in the mouth with a right jab. With two minutes left, Esparza drops for a takedown, but Markos stuffs it. Again, Esparza wants a takedown with 100 seconds left, but it’s stuffed. Finally, she gets one, but can’t do much with it and Markos is quickly back up. But Esparza sticks to her and ties her up for some knees, including one to the face. Markos breaks apart with a minute to go, and she’s bloodied up around her right eye. Esparza misses with a high kick, then lands a jab. Markos gets two punches off, then stuffs a takedown with 25 seconds left. Esparza gets a late takedown and there’s a scramble on the ground. Man. It’s close. MMAjunkie will give the third to Esparza 10-9 and the fight to her 29-28, but it could go either way.

Result: Randa Markos def. Carla Esparza via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Nordine Taleb vs. Santiago Ponzinibbio

Round 1 – Ponzinibbio heads out first in our final prelim and moves back and forth. Taleb is in the center looking for an opening. Through two minutes, no one’s finding any openings to speak of. Ponzinibbio tries a couple low kicks, then a right over the top. Ponzinibbio misses a right hand halfway through the frame, then Taleb tries to score with some leg kicks. Then he goes to the body. Ponzinibbio kicks, but Taleb catches it, then chases Ponzinibbio across the cage looking for the takedown on one leg. He can’t get it, but he lands some nice punches on the exit. They trade a little down the stretch, and it’s a close round, but MMAjunkie will give just a slight edge to Taleb, 10-9.

Round 2 – Ponzinibbio presses forward in the second, but Taleb tries to answer with kicks. Ponzinibbio may have Taleb hurt with a punch, though, and he pushes him back. Ponzinibbio stings him with two jabs. Taleb is bleeding around his nose and mouth quite a bit now, evidence of Ponzinibbio sneaking those punches through. Taleb keeps trying to answer with kicks, then tries a short Superman punch. With two minutes left, Ponzinibbio drops Taleb with a punch, then heads to the canvas immediately to try to finish. Taleb gets into guard, though, and tries to keep Ponzinibbio from posturing up so he can recover. Ponzinibbio gets to half-guard and looks to pass. He can’t get it done, but he’ll grind out the rest of the round on top. It’s a pretty easy 10-9 round for Ponzinibbio.

Round 3 – Not long into the third, referee Cyril Desjardins stops the action to warn Taleb for outstretched fingers, it appears. They get back started again and Ponzinibbio keeps scoring with punches that keep the blood flowing on Taleb’s face. Taleb kicks to the body, but he’s going to have to put together some kind of rally here. Ponzinibbio lands punches, then a kick to the body, then one to the head, then to the leg, then back to back punches to the jaw. Then a jab. He’s cruising in the striking department right now. With two minutes left, Taleb lands some low kicks, but they’re not doing much to stop Ponzinibbio from coming forward. Taleb gets some good punches off with his left and Ponzinibbio is cut up under his right eye. They pick up the pace a little down the stretch and Taleb takes a long look at the clock with 35 seconds left. Taleb lands five good punches in the final 10 seconds, but it’s not going to be enough. MMAjunkie gives the third to Ponzinibbio 10-9 and the fight to him 29-28. Wouldn’t be surprised to hear 30-27s, though.

Result: Santiago Ponzinibbio def. Nordine Taleb via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Paul Felder vs. Alessandro Ricci

Round 1 – Main card rolling with lightweights. Ricci tries to get inside quickly. But it’s Felder who scores with a leg kick, then a jab. Felder has Ricci already marked up under his right eye. Midway through, We’ve seen a lot of short kicks and punches, but no one taking a definitive advantage. Felder tries a spinning backfist and it’s just off the mark, but then he socres with a right, and Felder starts to turn it up with kicks, then a jumping knee to the body. The left jab is there for Felder. But Ricci answers with a right, then a stiff left jab. Felder hurts Ricci with 30 seconds left with a left elbow and sees him back up. He moves in in an instant and lands a knee, then starts piling on the punches, and this one’s going to be over. Ricci’s on his butt with his back against the fence, and Felder finishes him off after a series of rights and lefts.

Result: Paul Felder def. Alessandro Ricci via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 4:44

Sara McMann vs. Gina Mazany

Round 1 – Quick start for McMann. She lands a three-punch combo, then gets inside and drags Mazany straight to the canvas. She’s on top and lands a few lefts. Then a few more. She’s halfway around Mazany’s back, but Mazayn gets back to her feet. But just as soon, McMann drags her back down. She’s got an arm-triangle choke, and she locks it up with ease. It’s tight, and Mazany has to tap. As soon as the ref steps in, Mazany is in tears. She made a short-notice UFC debut, taking the fight just 16 days out. She couldn’t make the bantamweight limit and lost 20 percent of her purse. But she was no match for the former title challenger and Olympic medalist.

Result: Sara McMann def. Gina Mazany via submission (arm-triangle choke) – Round 1, 1:14

Elias Theodorou vs. Cezar Ferreira

Round 1 – Theodorou goes to the middle and pushes Ferreira back with a low kick, but Ferreira catches him and stumbles him. Theodorou doesn’t go down, though, and pretty soon nearly takes Ferreira off his feet. He kicks high, then touches Ferreira with a right. Theodorou kicks high again, but Ferreira kicks low and takes him off his feet for a second. They’re still mostly looking for openings after two minutes, but each taking a few fairly safe chances. Again, Ferreira nearly kicks Theodorou’s legs out. But he gets past it and lands a right. He eats a kick to the stomach, but catches it and uses it to try to take Ferreira down. They tie up along the fence, where Theodorou backs the Brazilian up and lands some short knees. Theodorou backs Ferreira up and then nearly lands a perfectly timed kick to the head, but it just grazes. He comes forward with a right, then a big kick to the body. He kicks high again, but it’s blocked. Then he gets another one through. A kick and punch land at the 10-second clap, and one more kick gets by in the closing seconds. Not dominant, but it’s a 10-9 first round for Theodorou.

Round 2 – Forty-five seconds in, Ferreira lands and drops Theodorou. He takes advantage immediately by trying to take his back on the ground. But Theodorou is back to his feet and mostly out of danger. Ferreira quickly drags him back down, though, and sticks to him. But Theodorou breaks off and lands a left and they go back to the center of the cage. Ferreira tries to push in and slips down. So Theodorou gets on him in a hurry and scoops him up for a slam. He goes to work on top with ground-and-pound, but Ferreira pushes out. When Theodorou tries to go back in, Ferreira gets a guillotine choke on. It looks good, but Theodorou pops out and he’ll be on top. He can’t get much done over 30 seconds, though, and Ferreira fights back to his feet with 90 seconds to go. Ferreira misses with a wild left, then gets touched up by a couple pawing Theodorou jabs. Theodorou lands a couple punches down the stretch, and it’s a close round, but he’ll get it 10-9 on the unofficial Junkie card.

Round 3 – A Ferreira slip early doesn’t have enough time for Theodorou to take advantage. Both men are playing things pretty safe in the first two minutes, and the fight could be hanging in the balance on this round. Theodorou stays outside, then can’t get a takedown. They tied up halfway through the final frame and Theodorou lands punches to the body. Ferreira can’t drag him down and they break apart. Theodorou pushes forward, but can’t land a combo, then gets taken down with 90 seconds left. Ferreira takes his back. Theodorou gets to his feet, but it’s not for long. Ferreira takes him down again and has a rear-naked choke and a body triangle locked up. Theodorou fights it off, but still isn’t going anywhere. With 35 seconds left, though, he gets out and picks Ferreira up and nearly gets a slam. Ferreira moves in for a takedown late, but Theodorou stuffs it. Ferreira takes the round 10-9, but it should be Theodorou’s fight, 29-28. But it could go the other way, too. Close fight.

Sam Sicilia vs. Gavin Tucker

Round 1 – UFC debut for Tucker, and he’s fired up. He goes right to the middle and kicks Sicilia’s lead leg. Then he tries to push forward with a punch and kicks the leg again. Tucker kicks high, but it’s blocked. He comes again with another high kick a minute in, then right back to Sicilia’s lead leg. Sicilia touches Tucker up with a right counter. Two minutes in, Tucker is proving a little tough for Sicilia to get a read on and line up to hit. But he’s pushing forward and just misses with a heavy right. Tucker kicks to the body, then again harder. He bounces outside nicely, which is making it hard for Sicilia to track him down. Tucker kicks high, but Sicilia blocks it. Then Sicilia gets a nice right hand through and a leg kick of his own. Whenever Sicilia gets close to Tucker in terms of chasing him down, he’s quickly out of there. Tucker lands a knee late, but Sicilia catches it. It’s a 10-9 first round for the newcomer, Tucker.

Round 2 – Tucker starts with kicks again and lands to the body, then the lead leg. Ninety seconds in, Tucker lands a kick to the leg, then nearly catches Sicilia flush in the face with one. Again, he goes to the lead leg. Sicilia’s problem has been getting Tucker to stand still enough to do any damage. He clips him with a punch, and Tucker wipes it away and showboats a little bit. Sicilia tags him with a right, but Tucker still is right there. Tucker is asking Sicilia to land on him. He kicks high, but Sicilia blocks it. A right hand for Sicilia gets through. Not much down the stretch, but it’s another 10-9 round for Tucker.

Round 3 – Sicilia probably needs to get a finish if he wants to leave with a win. He hasn’t found Tucker much yet tonight, so he’ll have to put something together. He seems to stun Tucker a little bit with a right, then gets inside to tie him up for the first time in the fight. But they break apart after 15 seconds and go back to the middle. Sicilia lands a right and pushes Tucker to the cage. With three minutes left, pretty much out of nowhere, Tucker goes for a takedown and gets one. But Sicilia bounces back up quickly and midway through, they’re back in the middle. Sicilia lands a good right, then misses with a 1-2. Tucker scores with a 1-2, and it’s almost like he’s toying with the veteran Sicilia. Sicilia is showing a little wear on his face and looks like he’s running down a bit. Tucker seems to have the same energy as he did in the start. He kicks Sicilia three times then plays around and goes for a roundhouse punch. The crowd loves it. He’s on cruise control toward a win and he dances when Sicilia misses him. He’s laughing at him in the octagon. The crowd erupts at the end, and Tucker puts his arms out and drops to his knees in the center of the cage, confident in victory. He gets a 10-9 third and should have the fight 30-27 in a mostly dominant performance.

Result: Gavin Tucker def. Sam Sicilia via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Johny Hendricks vs. Hector Lombard

Round 1 – Brad Jardine will look in on the co-main event. First middleweight fight for Hendricks. Should be interesting. No glove touch. Lombard circles left right away on the outside. Hendricks kicks Lombard’s lead right leg. Lombard goes to the middle and lunges with a left, but Hendricks is out of the way. Lombard drops for a moment and Hendricks drills him in the chin with a knee. Lombard stays upright, though, and tries to work some rights, then a left. Lombard sneaks a left through, then catches a Hendricks kick and lands a couple punches before pushing him to the fence. Lombard has a chance to do some damage on the break, but Hendricks escapes. Halfway through, Hendricks kicks again and Lombard ties him up for a moment. Hendricks kicks low and again Lombard catches it and drops him to his back. Then he latches on to him and ties him up on the fence. Hendricks has a rough time breaking out, but lands some short punches. They swing wildly on the break with 10 seconds left. It’s a 10-9 first round for Lombard.

Round 2 – Lombard tries to tie Hendricks up straight away, but the former champ breaks off. Hendricks kicks the leg and nearly has it caught again, but stays on his feet. Hendricks swings over the top, but misses. Then he stifles Lombard with a left that forces him to tie Hendricks up. They trade knees, but Lombard drills Hendricks low, then low again. Hendricks gets time to work it out and does. We restart at the 3:45 mark and Lombard lands a nice right. Then lands another as Hendricks goes low. They start trading a little more now and Hendricks lands. Again, Lombard catches Hendricks’ leg and tries to work him off-balance. A big knee lands for Hendricks with 90 seconds left, but it just forces Lombard in to tie him up on the fence. Referee Brad Jardine breaks them apart immediately, though, and gives Lombard a warning for grabbing the fence. That’s good for Hendricks because he can get a fresh start in the middle and not lose valuable time in the round being tied up. Lombard kicks low. Close round, but it’s a 10-9 frame for Hendricks on the Junkie card.

Round 3 – Lombard lands a right hand early that stumbles Hendricks. He stays on his feet, though, and eats a leg kick. Hendricks paws around, then thinks about a takedown, but it’s not there. They trade light kicks, then Hendricks again lands a knee that is caught. He lands a left shortly after, but Lombard still comes forward. Hendricks lands a nice left midway through the round, then ducks under a lombard right and nearly lands an uppercut. Hendricks keeps after the knee, and again has it caught and then gets taken down. But he’s up just as quickly after a fun scramble out. With a minute left, this thing probably hangs in the balance. Lombard lands some light kicks, then a left hand. Hendricks lands a left late and shakes it out immediately – maybe broken. It’s close again … but MMAjunkie will give it to Hendricks 10-9, and the fight 29-28. Could go either way.

Derrick Lewis vs. Travis Browne

Round 1 – Heavyweights in the main event. Mario Yamasaki looks in. Should be a fun one. Lewis throws a right immediately, and Browne counters with a punch that grazes. He follows with a slapping leg kick. Lewis goes high with a kick of his own, then backs up. Lewis misses a left kick, then circles right and lands a leg kick. Browne geos up the middle with a kick and hurts Lewis’s rib. Lewis holds on to it and seems ready to go down if Browne can hurt him some more. He does moments later with another kick up the middle, then kicks the leg. Lewis throws a spinning reverse kick halfway through, then another high kick. Lewis catches a right hook and drops Browne, but can’t finish. Then Browne lands to the midsection again, and again Lewis buckles from the pain. But he can’t get the finish. With 90 seconds left, it’s pretty obvious what Browne needs to do. Browne kicks Lewis’ left leg, then lands a right. Then he kicks up the middle again, and another. Another kick lands to the leg for Browne. Lewis lands a spinning kick late in the round, but Browne stays standing. It’s a 10-9 first round for Browne.

Round 2 – Browne kicks early, then drills Lewis with a leg kick. Lewis lunges forward with a right, but misses. Browne tries a Superman punch, but it’s off the mark. Browne kicks high, but Lewis counters and starts laying punches all over him. He’s got Browne covering up against the cage and he’s teeing off. Browne somehow stays standing, then ties Lewis up. But Lewis breaks it off and goes right back after him. Browne gets free and they tie up again. Browne gets underhooks, but when the fight spills down, it’s Lewis on top in half-guard, then side control. Then he gets to his feet, then throws Browne back down. He gets to half-guard, then re-sets and will try to pound Browne out. He lands a handful, then swings around and lets Browne up. Browne kicks up the middle. Then Lewis drills him with a right hand and drops him to the canvas. He jumps on top and starts landing absolute bombs. One. Two. Three. Four. Browne is out cold and takes at least two unnecessary punches before Yamasaki steps in.
