== Mixed Martial Arts Career ==
Fernandes began competing professionally in mixed martial arts in 2004. His debut took place at a Jungle Fight event in Brazil, where he submitted his opponent with a Rear Naked Choke at only 0:31 in the first round.

He hit a rough patch in his next two fights, his first coming at the hands of Urijah Faber. The bout was for Faber’s King of the Cage (KOTC) Bantamweight Championship, which Faber successfully defended by TKO (Doctor Stoppage) in the first round. The fight was Faber’s last before vacating the title, as he would vacate it to focus his attention on competing in the WEC.

Fernandes next faced off against Japanese sensation Norifumi Yamamoto at a [[K-1]] event in September of 2007. Yamamoto, the veteran, defeated Fernandes by Decision (Unanimous). He would go on to win his next two bouts, winning the first by Decision (Unanimous) and the next by Submission (Triangle Choke).

=== DREAM ===
It was then announced that Fernandes would be a participant in DREAM‘s 2009 Featherweight Grand Prix. In the opening round, Fernandes faced off against Takafumi Otsuka, where he won a Decision (Unanimous). The quarterfinals match pitted Fernandes against former DEEP Featherweight Champion and then-current DEEP Bantamweight Champion Masakazu Imanari. Once again the fight went to the judges’ decision, which Fernandes won the Decision (Unanimous), moving him on to the semifinals.

Fernandes next faced off against Wrestling stand-out Joe Warren, who made his debut in the grand prix, where he defeated former WEC Bantamweight Champion Chase Beebe and upset Norifumi Yamamoto, who had a win over Fernandes. The bout took place at DREAM 11 Featherweight Grand Prix 2009 Final Round, which featured both the semifinal and final bouts. At 0:42, Fernandes submitted Warren with an Armbar.

The finals, taking place later on at the event, pitted Fernandes against Hiroyuki Takaya, who had defeated Hideo Tokoro earlier on in the night. The fight went to the judges’ score cards, which Fernandes walked away with the close Decision (Split). With the win he won DREAM’s 2009 Featherweight Grand Prix, as well as earning himself the first-ever DREAM Featherweight Championship.

==== Defending the Title ====
It was rumored late-January 2010 that Fernandes would defend his DREAM featherweight title against former DREAM Lightweight Champion Joachim Hansen, who would be making his featherweight debut in hopes to jump-start his career. Only a few days after the rumors began, the bout was scheduled for March 2010 at [[DREAM.13]]. The bout took place on March 22, 2010, and it was Fernandes’ ground work that was the deciding factor in the fight, as Fernandes walked away the victor with the close Decision (Split).
