== Mixed Martial Arts Career ==
Herman began competing professionally in mixed martial arts in 2006, going 9-0 in smaller promotions, winning all his fights in extremely decisive fashion. All his wins came in the first round, six by way of (T)KO, two by submission via strikes, and the third with a Rear Naked Choke. After nine impressive wins, Herman was signed by EliteXC in 2008, making his debut at EliteXC Street Certified on February 16, 2008 against Mario Rinaldi. The fight was the first of Herman’s bouts to make it past the first round, going all the way into the third, but the fight still ended in Herman’s favor, as he dismantled his opponent with knees and punches, to have the fight stopped at 0:33 of the third round.
His next outing under the EliteXC banner took place on June 14, 2008 at EliteXC The Return of the King against Ron Waterman. Once again, Herman finished his opponent in the first round by TKO (Punches). Even though Herman made two impressive outings on two major EliteXC cards, his next outing for the promotion took place on one of their elite challenger series shows in October 10, 2008 against The Ultimate Fighter 2 alumni Kerry Schall. At 1:06 of the first round, Herman won his 12th fight in a row, defeating Schall with TKO (Knees and Punches).
Herman would improve his record to 13-0 in his next outing against former IFO Heavyweight Champion Chris Guillen, who was on a three fight losing streak, via TKO (Punches), once again in the first round.
At Sengoku No Ran 2009, in his first bout of 2009, Herman lost his first career fight to PRIDE veteran Mu Bae Choi. Choi defeated Herman via TKO (Punches) in the first round, to hand him his first loss.
Herman bounced back, fighting in Bellator Fighting Championships on May 1, 2009, against Josh Barnes, rocking his opponent with a knee and punches, ending the fight at 4:46 in the first round, getting himself back on the winning track. In his most high-profile fight, at this point in his career, Herman next faced the winner of both the UFC 8 and UFC 10 Tournament and MMA legend Don Frye at Shark Fights 6: Stars & Stripes on September 12, 2009, dismantling the legend at the one minute mark of the first round via punches.
He then faced “Big” Jim York on November 7, 2009 at Sengoku Eleventh Battle. Unlike Herman, who was then on a two-fight win streak, York was coming off a high-profile loss to former EliteXC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Silva. York used stiff jabs to score as the fight opened, and the standup appeared to be in his favor, but when Herman slipped on a kick, York followed and dropped for a Heel Hook. Unconcerned with the hold, Herman launched a series of heel kicks from his back that landed firmly in York’s face. As the shots continued to land, York’s arms dropped limp to his side. Herman sat up to finish with punches, but the result of the bout had already been secured. Herman won at 2:25 of the first round due to KO (Upkicks), now going three fights straight since losing his first career fight.
It was announced late-January 2010 that Herman had signed a deal with Shine Fights. Rumors about his first opponent were pointing to 12-year veteran of the sport Jeff Monson, who inked a deal with the promotion back in December of 2009.
Before a fight with Shine Fights materialized, Herman was announced as a participant for Abu Dhabi FC’s eight-man openweight tournament. The opening round took place on May 14, 2010 and Herman’s first bout was against PRIDE, UFC, DREAM, and Strikeforce veteran Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, who has had a very up-and-down career since making a big splash back in PRIDE. The Sokoudjou-Herman fight actually replaced a Sergei Kharitonov vs Marcio Cruz fight that was originally scheduled for the tournament. The winner of the tournament, spanning three events, will earn a prize of 1,000,000 AED, which is roughly $272,242.18. Herman ended up landing illegal knees in the second round, disqualifying himself, and giving Sokoudjou the win by DQ.
Herman’s next fight took place at Bellator 31 where he faced Michal Kita. At only 3:16 of the first round, Herman caught Kita with an Omoplata submission.
