”’Steve Carl”’ is an American mixed martial artist who competes as a Welterweight. He served in the United States Army, where he spent time in Iraq. Carl took up MMA while stationed in Fort Hood, Texas. Although he was told he might not fight again after shattering his right leg in a December 2006 auto accident, Carl returned 18 months later back to active mixed martial arts competition.

Carl was announced as a participant in Bellator‘s second season’s Welterweight tournament along with the likes of Dan Hornbuckle, Jacob McClintock, Ben Askren, and Jim Wallhead.

: “I was getting offers from the UFC and others, but Bellator was just a better opportunity for me,” Carl stated. “I’m really excited about the exposure that Bellator’s TV deal will bring me and the chance to fight against some awesome competition.”

Carl faced off against Brett Cooper in the opening round of the tournament. The bout took place at Bellator 15. The action remained tight throughout the 15-minute affair, and a scrambling grappling fest in the opening round gave way to an impressive striking exchange in the second. The bout appeared up for grabs in the final frame, and a few successful takedowns in the frame for Cooper coupled with some solid work from top position appeared to secure him the frame. But after the back-and-forth nature of the first two frames, anything was possible. In the end, two of the three judges scored the fight for Carl, and though the vocal objections of the crowd seemed to suggest they disagreed, Cooper was force to accept a split-decision loss.

His semifinals bout took place on May 20, 2010 at Bellator 19, where he faced off against Dan Hornbuckle, who defeated Tyler Stinson in the opening round to advance. After a brief exchange on the feet, Carl successfully took Hornbuckle to the canvas. Unfortunately for Carl, Hornbuckle was just fine attacking from his back. Hornbuckle locked in a Kimura attempt from the bottom, swept to top position, and finished off the hold, forcing the tap just 2:31 into the opening round.
