Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal, current Bellator contender and TNA wrestling superstar, fell victim to a highlight knockout loss and dramatic upset last night at Bellator 90 in West Valley City, U.T. With so much hype going into the bout, many felt a victory for King Mo was inevitable, and Bellator was certainly hoping Lawel would win and eventually become the promotion’s light-heavyweight champion due to how much of a star he has become. Emanuel Newton decided to change their plans with one spinning backfist delivered flush on the chin that left Lawal unconscious.
With no credit being taken from Newton, Lawal wasn’t exactly being the most defensive fighter, as he continuously dropped his hands after exchanges — a mistake that heightened his chances of eventually getting clipped.
Not only will this loss affect Lawal’s career, but also the plans Bellator and TNA had in store for the two-sport star. Lawal was Bellator’s biggest attraction in the light-heavyweight division, and perhaps even the entire promotion. Without his continuous progress, you can say Bellator will also have to get back to the drawing board, find and build man as promotable as Lawal, and try and sell him to the masses in an attempt to continue getting viewers. The only other two names even somewhat close to King Mo in terms of celebrity are Seth Petruzelli and Renato “Babalu” Sobral, both of whom are coming off losses.
This will be a step back for TNA as well, as Lawal was the promotion’s only two-sport athlete draw. King Mo made a huge mistake leaving his hands down last night, and now his career, Bellator, and TNA will have to pay for it.
