Although many fans in the San Jose crowd vehemently disagreed with it, Benson Henderson hung on to the UFC lightweight belt tonight with a razor thin, split decision win over Gilbert Melendez.
Melendez put on a determined effort, and hunted after Henderson for good portions of the fight, but two of the three judges likely handed the champ the win due to his offensive output. Henderson never appeared to have Melendez in trouble, but the well rounded fighter was able to land more punches and kicks than the former Strikeforce champ. As a result, Henderson was handed his seventh consecutive win via decision, right before he proposed to his girlfriend, live on FOX.
The co-headliner was less competitive, as Daniel Cormier’s wrestling and clinch work along the fence were too much for Frank Mir, and the accomplished wrestler was awarded the UD victory.
The card was stacked full of finishes, as Josh Thomson, Matt Brown and Myles Jury were just a few of the fighters who pulled of highlight reel wins.
Here are the results from the UFC on FOX 7 card.
